Backbench is built to know as little about you as possible.

Your postcode

Your postcode is stored on your device. When you look up your area it is sent to postcodes.io (to find your constituency, council and ward) and to Democracy Club (to find your elections and candidates). Neither lookup is linked to your name, and we do not store your postcode on our servers unless you create an account and choose to sync it.

Your account (optional)

If you sign in, we store your email address and your synced data — your postcode and the politicians you follow — with our hosting provider, Supabase. This data is protected so only your signed-in account can read it. You can delete it at any time by deleting your account.

Analytics

We record anonymous usage events (for example “opened the Votes tab”) tagged with a random per-install identifier. Events never include your postcode or any content that identifies you. We use them solely to improve the app; we do not sell data or show advertising.

Data about politicians

Information about representatives shown in the app is public data published by Parliament, the devolved legislatures, the Electoral Commission and Democracy Club (CC BY 4.0), presented with attribution.
